Download Weebly Website: Full Backup as an Offline ZIP
How to download a Weebly website: what the built-in archive export includes and misses, and how to get a complete offline ZIP, even without the login.

To download a Weebly website you have two routes. The first is the Archive export in Weebly's settings, which gives you a ZIP of your site's files if you can still log in. The second is a crawled offline copy, which saves every public page exactly as visitors see it and works with or without the login. The archive is useful, but Weebly itself does not present it as a full backup. The blog, store, forms and member areas all rely on Weebly's servers. This guide covers both routes, what to check in each, and what to do if the account is lost or the site is already offline.
Two ways to download a Weebly website
Each route answers a different question, so it helps to know the difference before you start.
- Weebly's built-in archive. You start it from the site's settings and Weebly packages the site into a ZIP for you to download. It comes from the source, so it can contain files you uploaded. It only exists while you have the account, though, and the parts of the site that run on Weebly's servers do not come along in working form.
- A crawled offline copy. A downloader visits the live site the way a browser does. It follows every internal link and saves the HTML, images, stylesheets, scripts and fonts into a ZIP that opens offline. You need no login, only a public address. What you get is the site as visitors see it: every page, including the rendered blog posts and product pages.
For anything important, do both. The archive costs nothing if you can log in, and the crawled copy is the one you can open in a browser years from now and see the site as it really looked.
How do I export my Weebly website from the dashboard?
Weebly's interface has been relabelled more than once since Square bought the company, so the exact names may differ slightly on your account. The process goes like this:
- Log in to Weebly and open the site you want to save.
- Go to the site's Settings. In recent dashboards the export option sits under the general settings and is labelled Archive or Export.
- Start the archive. Weebly builds the ZIP, which can take a few minutes on larger sites, and then offers a download link or sends it by email.
- Download the ZIP right away and store it somewhere you control, such as your computer, an external drive or cloud storage.
- Unzip it and open the home page file in a browser to check what you actually got (see the checklist below).
Do not treat the dashboard as your storage location. Some hosting guides report that Weebly keeps only a few recent exports, and download links of this kind often stop working after a while. We could not confirm the exact rules for every account, so the safe assumption is that the archive in your dashboard is temporary and the file on your own drive is the backup.
What does the Weebly archive include, and what does it leave out?
Weebly describes the archive as a copy of the site's files, not a complete backup. In practice, what lands in the ZIP depends on which features your site uses. Rather than trusting a generic list, open your own export and check it against the table below.
| Part of the site | What to expect in the archive | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pages (text, images, galleries) | Usually included as HTML with the theme's CSS and your uploaded images | Open each page file and compare it with the live page |
| Blog | May be missing, incomplete or exported without working navigation. Comments are not exported as working comments | Count the posts in the export against the live blog archive |
| Online store | Product pages may appear, but checkout, cart, inventory and orders depend on Weebly/Square and will not work | Export products and orders separately from the store dashboard if it offers CSV export |
| Contact and other forms | The form's look may be kept, but submitting it does nothing, and past submissions are not part of the site files | Save form entries from the dashboard separately |
| Member / password-protected pages | Login and access rules are server features and do not survive | Copy the content of those pages manually |
| Embedded apps and widgets | Often reference external services and break or disappear | Click through every embed offline |
| Site search | Does not work without Weebly's servers | Expect it to be gone |
The pages most often reported as "missing" are blog posts and store product pages. These are generated by Weebly from its database rather than stored as ordinary pages, so they may not show up in the archive the way the visitor sees them. That is the gap a crawled copy fills.
How to download a Weebly site as a complete offline ZIP (no login needed)
A crawler does not care how Weebly stores a page internally. If a visitor can reach it through a link, it gets saved. With Website Downloader it takes three steps, all in the browser:
- Paste the site's address into the download field. Use either the custom domain or the
yoursite.weebly.comaddress. - Start the download and watch the live progress as pages are counted. You can close the tab or switch the computer off, because the crawl runs on the server.
- Download the finished ZIP and unzip it. Open
index.htmlin any browser and the site works offline, with blog posts, product pages, images and the theme intact.
Most Weebly sites are small. A portfolio, a club site or a small business site with a blog often stays under 100 pages, which the free plan covers with no account (the ZIP is kept for one day, so download it promptly). A site with a long blog or a large store catalogue can go past that. The one-time Single Site option covers up to 5,000 pages for 7.99 EUR. See pricing for the monthly plans if you look after several sites.
A few honest limits. Pages behind a Weebly member login are not downloaded. If a site refuses automated downloads, the service reports that instead of handing you an empty archive. For a fuller walkthrough of the ZIP approach, see Download a Website as ZIP Online.
Archive export vs. crawled offline copy: which one do you need?
| Weebly archive | Crawled offline ZIP | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs the Weebly login | Yes | No |
| Works after the site is offline | Only if you exported before | Only if you crawled before (otherwise see the Wayback section below) |
| Blog posts and product pages as visitors see them | Not reliably | Yes, every linked public page |
| Opens offline in a browser | Partly, depending on the export | Yes, links rewritten to local files |
| Forms, checkout, member logins, search | Do not work | Do not work |
| Store orders, customer data, form entries | Not included | Not included (export from the dashboard) |
Choose by purpose:
- Weebly backup before cancelling a plan: make both, and add CSV exports of store data and form entries if you have them.
- Archive for the record (a closed business, a finished project, a club's history): the crawled copy is what you want, because it preserves the site as people saw it.
- Migration: the crawled copy gives you every page's final text and images in one place to rebuild from. More on that below.
Can I move my Weebly site to another host or to WordPress?
Yes, but how much work it takes depends on where you are going.
To a static host
If the site is mostly information pages, the offline ZIP can serve as the new site. Unzip it, upload the folder to any web host that serves plain HTML, and point your domain at it. Everything that is HTML, CSS, images and scripts keeps working. Contact forms need replacing with a form service or a simple email link. A store needs a real e-commerce platform.
To WordPress
There is no clean one-click way to export a Weebly site to HTML and have it turn into a WordPress site. Weebly's themes and WordPress themes are built differently. A realistic migration from Weebly to WordPress looks like this:
- Make the full offline copy so you have every page, post and image in one folder.
- Set up WordPress on the new host and pick a theme.
- Recreate the page structure, then move text and images across, using the offline copy as your reference.
- Move blog posts. For a handful, copy and paste. For many, look into an import plugin, but check the results post by post.
- Keep the same URLs where you can, or set up redirects from the old Weebly paths so links and search rankings survive.
- Rebuild forms and the store with WordPress plugins, and import product data from the store CSV.
The same approach works for any builder-to-builder move. Our guides for Wix and Squarespace show how other closed platforms compare.
Weebly site already gone or the login lost? Restore it from the Wayback Machine
If you can't get into the account any more, perhaps because the email is gone or a former designer set it up, the crawled copy still works as long as the site is online. Nothing on the visitor side requires a login.
If the site has already been taken down, the live web can't help. The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine has captured many Weebly sites over the years, though, and a capture can be turned back into a working offline copy.
The Wayback Machine downloader rebuilds the site from a capture you choose, removes the archive.org playback toolbar and the links back to archive.org, and delivers the result as a ZIP. Restores of up to 100 pages are free. Larger ones are a one-time 14.99 EUR for up to 5,000 pages. Keep in mind that a restore can only contain what the Internet Archive captured, so pages it never visited won't appear. The step-by-step process is in Restore Website from Wayback Machine.
Will the downloaded Weebly site work offline?
Mostly, yes. Pages, navigation, images, galleries, fonts, embedded video files and PDFs all open from your drive. Anything that needs a server to answer does not.
For a Weebly site that means the contact form, the store's cart and checkout, member logins, blog comments and site search will look right but do nothing. That is fine for an archive. For a site you plan to keep running elsewhere, these are the parts to rebuild.
FAQ
Do Weebly export download links expire?
Treat them as temporary. Some guides report that Weebly keeps only a few recent exports, and download links like these generally don't stay valid forever. Download the ZIP as soon as it is ready and keep your own copy.
Does the Weebly export include my blog posts and online store?
Not reliably in a form you can browse. Blog posts and product pages are generated from Weebly's database, and store orders, inventory and customer data are not part of the site files at all. A crawled offline copy captures the published posts and product pages, and the store dashboard is the place to export product and order data.
Will contact forms work in the offline copy?
No. A form needs a server to receive and send the submission, so offline it is only a picture of a form. Save past submissions from the Weebly dashboard. If you move the site, replace the form with a form service or an email link.
Is it legal to download a Weebly site that isn't mine?
Saving a public site for your own reference is generally treated differently from republishing it. Copying someone else's content and putting it online as your own can infringe copyright. The rules depend on your country and the situation, and this is not legal advice. If you plan to reuse or publish the content, get the owner's permission or ask a lawyer.
Can I download a Weebly site on a Mac, Chromebook or phone?
Yes. The online downloader runs in the browser, so nothing needs installing on any device. See the guides for Mac and Chromebook for the other options on each platform.
